How to ignore distractions during the study? Attention and focus are some of the most important skills we can develop. Today we live in a world that is saturated with distractions. There is no wonder that many students and workers experience difficulty focusing and getting things done.
We all know that distraction is a common issue for college and university students. Whether at the library, at home, or in-class inside a lecture hall, we’re constantly caught up in our phones or chatting with friends.
Why does Distracting happen During Studying?
Distractions happen during studying for various reasons, and we think we can explain some of them. We decided to start this conversation here on “The Distractors,” and we’ll look at the first two on our list:
- Fear of failure: why we need self-control
- Competition: focus on success instead of the fear of failure
Fear of failure is a big reason why distracting happens during studying, and it can affect our performance at work and school. The solution to the fear of failure is self-control. It’s an essential skill that helps us fight fear and achieve more of our goals. One way you can empower yourself is by practicing mindfulness meditation or taking a walk in nature.
How can we Learn and Focus Better?
Overcoming distractions can be a challenge for those trying to study. At the Swiss Institute, we have helpful methods to overcome distractions during the study.
Some of the most common distractions include:
- Being a bad study environment
- Being a bad study habit
- Being a messy student
There are plenty of ways to overcome just about all of these distractions.
First, change up your study environment. In order to get the best results from your studying, you should make sure that you’re in a area where you won’t be distracted. As mentioned earlier, one of the biggest distractions is having a bad study environment, so make sure you go to a quiet place where you won’t be distracted by the environment. If you don’t have a quiet enough room or specific area, find a nice cafe or library where they will disturb you.
In addition, in order to help overcome distraction during the study, students turn to a variety of study aids designed to help them stay focused. Narrowing down from those thousands of remedies can be a daunting task.
Some focus on their own techniques for staying on task with a wide variety of products. A sample of these products ranges from colored highlighters, and sticky notes to noise-canceling headphones and calming scent machines meant to help students concentrate.
While many of these technologies have proven useful at eliminating outside distractions, students still deal with internal distractions that require different tools to address. In order to help solve this issue, students may use certain techniques that employ the process of self-regulation. A few of these techniques are counting backward from a hundred, using flashcards to remember things, and, most importantly, listening to music without words.
Music is a powerful tool, as it causes a change in physiology, leading to increased levels of arousal and alertness.
