Course Outline
This two (2) day training program is designed for people who wish to or are required to develop the skills and knowledge needed to provide first aid. This qualification is widely utilised and participants in this course may come from a wide variety of vocational backgrounds such as workplace first aid officers, security guards, truck drivers, and pool attendants.
This course is NOT recommended for Childcare workers or for teachers, the HLTAID012 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting is the recommended qualification for these vocations.
People with existing first aid skills and knowledge, such as through the attainment of an HLTAID011 Provide First Aid or equivalent, may choose to undertake a “Refresher” version of this course. The Refresher version has the same content, and identical assessments as a “New Entrant” course, the refresher version is delivered over a shorter duration and is only available to people who have undertaken this qualification, or an equivalent qualification previously.
The outcome from a “Refresher” or a “New Entrant Course is identical. The outcome for each course is a Statement of Attainment in HLTAID011 Provide First Aid.
People seeking to participate in a “refresher” course will have to provide a previous first aid qualification such as an HLTAID011 Provide first aid or equivalent to be accepted into the course. Course Description
Oscar Academy offers a Nationally Recognised First Aid training program that meets the requirements of WorkSafe and the Australian Resuscitation Council.
Many organisations adhere to the Australian Resuscitation Council recommendation that First Aid skills be refreshed at least every three years (see www.resus.org.au).
This two day course is delivered face to face in locations local to our participants, this may be the participant’s own or a public training venue such as a community centre or local meeting room.
Due to the intensive nature of the class, the maximum class size is restricted to 12 people.
Course start time is 9.00 am and will complete at 5.00 pm on each day. Additional time is permitted if the participants in the course require additional support due to language and literacy support, this typically should not exceed an hour.
The course can operate on any day of the week.
As part of the “hands-on” training all participants will be applying bandages and other first aid techniques to themselves and fellow classmates, and thus lying on the floor, bandaging others, being bandaged, learning to resuscitate on a manikin on the floor are is expected to be performed and as such Participants should dress in suitable comfortable clothing.
Skills Learnt Include:
- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Use of an Automatic Defibrillator
- Methods of assessing a casualty
- Use of barrier devices for CPR
Applicants are Exempt from our LLN Assessment if they can Demonstrate that they possess one of the Following
- An Australian HSC qualification.
- An Australian Certificate IV level qualification delivered in English or higher.
- An Australian Higher Education qualification delivered in English.
- A recognised English language testing result of IELTS 5.5 or higher.
Applicants who do not have sufficient English Language skills will be referred to an English Language provider and encouraged to reapply for the course when their English Language skills have improved.
We will attempt to support you with some assistance with English, such as providing verbal assessments in English, however should your needs for support or assistance exceed our skills, we will refer you to a suitable organisation to assist you further, this may be TAFE local to you or your workplace.
Participants with concerns about their ability to complete the course will need to discuss this with their employer; Oscar Academy is available to participate in these discussions if required.
This unit of competency is nationally recognised and can only be delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that complies with the governing standards of quality control and quality training and assessment.
Assessment is based on competency i.e. ability to perform tasks to a required standard. Assessment is conducted through a combination of theory paper and practical demonstration.

- And many other conditions.
Both training days will be “hands on” training with the assessment sessions being scheduled for the afternoon of the second day.
In line with Oscar Academy LLN Policy, unless otherwise exempt, applicant will need to complete Oscar Academy LLN Assessment, applicants who do not satisfactorily complete the LLN Assessment will not be permitted to undertake the course.
Upon Successful Completion of the course Assessments you will awarded a Statement of Attainment in
HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Should there be another way we can assist you with ensuring that you max your chances of completing the course though us changing something or accommodating your needs please call our Administration Staff.
Should a participant not be successful with their first attempt at completing the course, they will be allowed another opportunity to sit and complete the course at no charge, should the participant still not have completed the course satisfactorily, they will need to discuss their situation and most likely make a fresh application to sit the course complete with an additional course payment.
Oscar Academy is flexible in the format and timing of learning and assessment activities to ensure that we provide every opportunity for participants to demonstrate their skills and abilities. Should you need support or assistance beyond our skills we will refer you to a suitable organisation to assist you further.
We have been provided with specific instructions from the Industry Skills Council on our ability to modify the assessment to meet the needs of those with special needs, this is often called “Reasonable Adjustment” specifically, we have been advised in the HLT First Companion Volume Implementation Guide Version 3.1 November 2020, ( available from https://vetnet.education.gov.au/Pages/TrainingDocs.aspx?q=ced1390f-48d9-4ab0-bd50-b015e5485705)
Reasonable Adjustment
It is important to note that the HLTAID competency standards do require a level of physical ability to meet the evidence requirements for assessment. These standards relate to the level of performance required to provide resuscitation and respond to an emergency situation where there may be risk to life.
Due to the potential risk to health and safety where a nominated first aider, or worker with duty of care, does not have the ability to perform resuscitation and/or first aid to the performance standard it is not appropriate to issue a statement of attainment to students who are physically unable to meet the assessment requirements.
In cases where a student has attended a resuscitation or first aid course but is unable to meet the full requirements of the competency, an RTO may wish to provide that student with a certificate of attendance, or similar, as an indication of their participation in the course
Due to the requirements of maintaining a safe learning environment, Oscar Academy reserves the right to withdraw any participant(s) on the grounds of safety.
This qualification can be achieved through a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process.
A Recognition of Prior Learning process is where you provide objective evidence of your skills and knowledge demonstrating your competency in this unit of competency.
Possible evidence of competency provided by you may include documents such as letters, reports, certificates and other paperwork from Employers, referees and Clients specifically confirming your knowledge and skills in CPR.
This evidence is then analysed by our RPL Assessor who determines if you have me the requirement of the unit, if you have met every requirement, then the qualification will be awarded to you. If you have NOT met every requirement, then you will need to undertake the course.
RPL for CPR is seldom undertaken, most applicants simply chose to complete the course as a simpler pathway to competency, but under the legislation for Registered Training Organisations RPL is a right of every participant.

Fees and Charges
The fees for this course $97.00 fees are to be paid in full prior to the course commencement.
There is a cost for RPL submissions, fees are charged per unit of competency. RPL applications are assessed at a rate of $120 per hour, with the maximum fee being $480 per unit. All RPL assessment Fees are GST exempt.
Fees can be paid by cash, credit card, EFPOS, EFT.
A full refund of the course fee is available provided we receive a full weeks’ notice of the cancellation, if we receive less than a week’s notice we can only refund 50% of the course fee.
In cases of extreme hardship application in writing can be made to the CEO to vary these terms.
All Participants should note that lost statements of attainment can be replaced, the fee for this is $22 and will require the participant to advise of their name and other suitable personal details to allow us to confirm their identity.
